Author
    (May 23, 1910-November 13, 1952)
    Born in Brooklyn, New York
Wrote over 100 children's books, including 'The Runaway Bunny,' (1942), 'The Little Island' (1946) and 'Goodnight Moon' (1947)
She wrote under five pseudonyms in addition to her own name.
During a dispute with her publisher, she threatened to shoot him a bow and arrow.
She had affairs with the pretender to the Spanish throne, Prince Juan Carlos, and actress Michael Strange.
She had an ironic death: two weeks after emergency surgery to remove an ovarian cyst, she kicked up her leg to show the doctor how well she was feeling, dislodging a blood clot that caused a fatal embolism.
She insisted that the illustrators of her books should get royalties equal to hers instead of the standard flat fees.
She avoided speaking down to children.
'Child Behavior' wrote of Goodnight Moon, 'It seems almost unlawful that you can hypnotize a child off to sleep as easily as you can by reading this small classic.'
Fans of her books included George W. and Laura Bush, who have described their affinity for 'Goodnight Moon' while children, and David Letterman, who called 'The Runaway Bunny' one his favorite books to read to his son.
