Vocalist

The Resume

    (July 16, 1939- )
    Born in Memphis, Tennessee
    Birth name was William Yarbrough
Recorded the singles ‘You Don’t Miss Your Water’ (1961), ‘Everybody Loves a Winner’ (1966), ‘Tribute to a King’ (1968), ‘Private Number’ (with Judy Clay, 1968), ‘I Forgot to Be Your Lover’ (1969) and ‘Tryin’ to Love Two’ (1977)

Why he might be annoying:

He gave up studying medicine to become a recording artist.
After he scored his first R&B hit with ‘You Don’t Miss Your Water,’ his career momentum was disrupted by a two-year hitch in the army.
’Tryin’ to Love Two’ was his only song to cross over to the pop Top 40.
Like Johnnie Taylor, he was a Stax artist who landed his biggest hit with another label.

Why he might not be annoying:

He introduced his church’s organist, Booker T. Jones (of Booker T and the MGs) to Stax Records.
In addition to his own hits, he co-wrote the blues staple ‘Born Under a Bad Sign.’
He received the Rhythm and Blues Foundation Pioneer Award (1987) and the W.C. Handy Heritage Award (2003).
His return to Stax with the album ‘This Is Where I Live’ (2016) earned him his first Grammy nominations at age 77, producing a win for Best Americana Album.
