He had a number of statues of himself erected. The most prominent, being a forty-six foot statue of him in a three-piece suit, lavishly plated with gold, perched on a 236 foot tall tower opposite his presidential palace. Spotlights illuminate the figure of the President, while a hidden motor causes the statue to rotate a full circle every 24 hours.
He banned opposition parties and newspapers.
He's made sure that thousands of portraits of him hang publicly.
The Communist Party of Turkmenistan was renamed 'The Democratic Party,' despite the lack of elections and competition.
He named stadiums and streets after himself.
His name is very long and hard to spell.

The rest of his family was killed in a 1948 Earthquake, meaning he had to grow up in a orphanage.
