Of the two male candidates she defeated for the Parti socialiste banner, she said ‘gazelles run faster than elephants.'
Her opposition's blunders, particularly regarding the first-time employment contract for youth, were the biggest boost to her presidential fortunes.
She did not marry her civil partner (the party leader), who fathered all four of her children under the PACS (civil solidarity pact).
Until Lionel Jospin - under whom she once served - withdrew from the bid for the 2007 presidency, her status as a candidate was an uncertainty.
Especially after visiting a Chilean slum area, her shoes were a hot topic across French television screens.

She lost the French presidential election to Nicolas Sarkozy (2007).
