The Resume
Sometimes referred to as Levi
Wrote the 'Gospel of Matthew' (circa 85 AD)
Died in modern day Turkey
Why he might be annoying
Before becoming an apostle, he was a Roman tax collector.
He changed his name from Levi to Matthew after he converted.
Despite this, Luke still calls him Levi throughout his gospel.
He claimed an angel dictated to him as he wrote.
He is often depicted in art as having wings.
He decided to be a disciple when Jesus randomly walked up to him while he was seated outside his house and said, 'Follow me.'
He was considered a traitor by Christ's friends because he had been apart of the Roman establishment.
He is often confused with the Matthew that replaced Judas Iscariot in the twelve apostles.
Some believe his gospel is the most anti-Semitic, as it depicts Jesus railing against many Jewish institutions.
He is the patron saint of bankers.
Why he might not be annoying
He gave up his considerable wealth as a tax collector to follow penniless Jesus Christ.
He made a huge feast on the day Jesus called him and invited many of his old buddies.
Jesus didn't care that he was formally a traitor, as he had aimed on 'not calling the just, but the sinners.'
He preached for 15 years among the Jews that Christ was the messiah.
He is recognized as a saint in both the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches.
