    Daughter of Grand Duke Louis VI of Hesse and Princess Alice of the United Kingdom
    Wife of Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich of Russia
    Sister of Empress Alexandra Fyodorovna of Russia
    She upset Queen Victoria when she rejected the advances of Grand Duke Frederick II.
    After the death of her husband, she became a nun.
    She also became a vegetarian.
    As a child she cleaned her own room, even with her royal status.
    Unlike other royals, she did a lot of work to help the poor.
    After her husband was assassinated with a bomb (1905), she publicly forgave the killer and campaigned unsuccessfully to have him pardoned.
    Prince Felix Yusupov considered her a second mother.
    She was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church after her murder.
    She helped build the St. Mary Magdalene Convent on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, where she is buried.
    After being pushed into a shaft by her killers, she and her companions survived two grenade explosions , but ultimately succumbed to injuries from her fall.
