The Resume

    (November 25, 1835-August 11, 1919)
    Emigrated to America (1848)
    Wrote 'The Gospel of Wealth'
Owned Carnegie Steel, the largest steel industry in America
Founded the Carnegie Institute of Technology, Carnegie Hall and libraries in every U.S. state but Rhode Island
Retired the richest man in the world (1901)

Why he might be annoying:

He made his fortunes during the Guilded Age of American history.
He put his name on most of the buildings he controlled or built.
He sold his steel company holdings to J.P. Morgan for $250 million in one of the largest industrial takeovers in American history (1901).
He allowed other industrialists to further corner the market and create monopolies.
    He was a social Darwinist.
He preferred to live outside of New York City in homes near his factories in New York state.
He looks a lot like a mall Santa.

Why he might not be annoying:

His 'Gospel of Wealth' dictates that rich are morally responsible to spend their money to help further society.
His name is synonymous with philanthropy.
He gave away $350 million, 90% of his fortune, to charitable causes during his lifetime, which, in today's dollars, would be almost $3 billion.
He believed in the cause for world peace.
He loved to read, so he constructed many libraries to share his love of books with the rest of society.
He is a classic example of the 'rags-to-riches' story, working as a child as a bobbin boy.
    He practiced what he preached.
