Why he might be annoying
He made Chuck Berry's Maybeline a hit record in return for being listed as a co-writer of the song.
He put on a show at the Boston Arena that resulted in his being charged with incitement to riot.
He claimed that he received payments from record companies for 'consultation,' not as an inducement to play their records. This led to the payola scandals of the 1950's.
He pleaded guilty to two counts of commercial bribery.
Heavy drinking after his career was ruined led to his death.
Why he might not be annoying
He was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a charter member in 1986
He was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 1988.
He broke down barriers by playing music by black artists for primarily white audiences.
He promoted the 'Moondog Coronation Ball,' which is widely regarded as the first ever rock concert.
He had a show on ABC-TV that was cancelled when Frankie Lymon danced with a white girl, which enraged ABC's Southern affiliates.
