Military Personnel
    (November 13, 1894-March 21, 1945)
    Born in Berlin, Germany
    Member of the SS
Head of the Kripo (Criminal investigation department of the German police; 1936-44)
    President of Interpol (1942-43)
Commander of Einsatzgruppe B during the invasion of the Soviet Union
Executed for participating in the plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler
He served as a mole in the Berlin police for the Nazis before they took power.
He introduced 'gas vans' (vehicles modified to funnel their exhaust to a sealed chamber) to replace mass shootings by the SS.
He was partly inspired by an incident in which he drove home drunk after a party, parked in his garage, fell asleep with the engine running and nearly died from carbon monoxide poisoning.
As head of Kripo, he helped develop Nazi Germany's anti-Gypsy laws.
He recommended using Gypsies in 'medical experiments' at the Dachau concentration camp.
After the 'Great Escape' from the Stalag Luft III POW camp, he followed Heinrich Müller's orders to choose 50 re-captured prisoners to be executed.
He may have joined the anti-Hitler resistance only out of fear of being tried by the Allies for war crimes.
After the failed assassination against Hitler, he went into hiding, but was arrested when his mistress betrayed him.
He was gassed twice during World War I.
He became disillusioned with Hitler after the mass executions of 'the Night of the Long Knives.' (1934)
He provided information on SS strength and logistics to the anti-Nazi resistance.
Foreseeing the crimes Einsatzgruppe B would commit, he tried to avoid the appointment, but was persuaded by anti-Hitler plotters Ludwig Beck and Hans Oster to accept so he would continue to be in a position to report on SS activities.
After the Wansee Conference, he provided the plans for the Final Solution to the resistance.
He lied to his superiors about the number of executions his Einsatzgruppe performed.
Based on Hitler's order to have the assassination plotters 'hanged like cattle,' he was executed by being hanged with piano wire from a meat hook.
