    Born in Askainen, Finland
    Served in the Imperial Russian army (1887-1917)
    Commander-in-Chief of the Finnish Defense Force (1918-19,1939-45)
    Regent (1918-19) and President (1944-46) of Finland

Why he might be annoying:

    He was expelled from the Finnish Cadet Corps for going on leave without permission (1886).
    He forgot most of the Finnish he learned as a child while serving in the Russian army and had to re-learn it when he returned to the country.
    He was fired from the Russian army while on sick leave after falling off his horse.
    He led Finnish forces as allies of Nazi Germany during World War II.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He spoke six languages: Swedish, Finnish, Russian, English, German and French.
    He resisted attempts by monarchists to name him king (1919) and by right-wing parties to install him as a military dictator (1929).
    Joseph Stalin told a Finnish delegation that Mannerheim was the only reason their country was not occupied following World War II.
    His birth day is celebrated as Flag Day by the Finnish Defense Forces.
