Why Food Network might be annoying
A better name for it might be ‘the 24-Hour Emeril Lagasse and Rachael Ray Network.’
It originally featured classic cooking shows like ‘The Galloping Gourmet,’ but soon phased them out.
Despite its supposed food emphasis, it added dating, decorating, and home-improvement shows to cash in on reality-TV fads.
It hires hosts based on looks and razzle-dazzle, rather than cooking knowledge and ability.
It spun off Food TV Canada.
Fans claim it dumbs down programming with ‘cooking for imbeciles’ type shows like ‘Semi-Homemade Cooking with Sandra Lee.’
Why Food Network might not be annoying
Its ratings improve year after year.
Fans feel the shows should be more about entertainment than education anyway (after all, it’s not PBS).
It features shows about fattening foods and shows about healthy foods.
It airs the cult Japanese series ‘Iron Chef.’
It provides free recipes on its web site.
It keeps Z-list has-beens like Gordon Elliott, Marc Summers and Bobby Rivers off the streets.
Its programming is labelled as ‘food porn.’
