First American in the history of Olympic Track and Field to win four gold medals in a single Olympics (Berlin, 1936)
Founder of The Jesse Owens Foundation for Inner City Youth in Chicago
Awarded the Medal of Freedom, the highest honor the U.S. can give to a civilian (1976)
Was posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal (1990)

Why he might be annoying:

He was frail and had recurring pneumonia.
He was a business partner in a chain of cleaning stores that left him $55,000 in debt when his partners skipped town.
He smoke a pack of cigarettes each day, causing him to die of lung cancer.

Why he might not be annoying:

He is honored on a 32¢ U.S. commemorative stamp.
He had to deal with racism, especially during the Olympics in Nazi Germany.
His family was poor, so he had to take on odd jobs.
Not only did he break his ass falling down a flight of stairs, but one week later he also broke three world records and tied for a fourth at the Big Ten meet in Ann Arbor, MI (May 25, 1935).
He became an American hero for his performance at the 1936 Olympics, making Adolf Hitler look bad.
