    Earned Bachelor of Divinity degree from Hartford Theological Seminary (1955)
    Moved to Atlanta to become head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and coordinate peaceful protests aimed at racial equality (1964)
    Helped draft the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965
    U.S. congressional representative from Georgia (1973-1977)
    U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations (1976-1979)
    Mayor of Atlanta, Georgia (January 1982-January 1990)
    Co-chaired committee that brought the Summer Olympic Games to Atlanta (1996)
    Portrayed himself in the Spike Lee film '4 Little Girls (1997)'

Why he might be annoying:

    He was going to follow in his father's footsteps and become a dentist but became politically motivated and abandoned the idea.
    He ran for Congress in 1970 and lost
    He ran for Governor of Georgia in 1990 and lost.
    As U.N. Ambassador, he went against the policy of President Carter's administration and met with a member of the P.L.O. without telling his boss, then was forced to resign.
    As the co-chairman of Good Works International in the late 1990's, he was accused of whitewashing a report on sweatshop activities in Vietnam concerning Nike shoes, a corporate sponsor of the organization.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He studied the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi and though he endured death threats, he preached non-violent solutions to racial injustice.
    He was a close friend and colleague of Martin Luther King, Jr. and was with him on that motel balcony in Memphis when King was assassinated.
    He was married to the same woman for 40 years until her death in 1994.
    Georgia State University established the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies, a prestigious school noted for excellence in academic achievement, extensive research and high graduation rate.
