He was once afraid of stepping into the foul line.
He was the losing pitcher of the 7th game of the 1964 World Series.
Following the 1964 season, he failed to get the Yankees back into the postseason in the remaining seasons of his playing career.
He retired from playing with a losing record of 6-7.

He got along with Don Zimmer as friends.
He was the roving instructor of the inaugural Mariners team.
He was diagnosed with multiple myeloma.
He had the most complete games in the American League twice (1965 and 1969).
One of his three sons, Jason died with the cause of leukemia at the age of 11.
