The Resume

    (February 25, 1938- )
    Born in Hollywood, California
Acted in ‘Diary of Anne Frank,’ ‘The Best of Everything,’ ‘300 Spartans,’ ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth,’ ‘Marnie,’ ‘Cable Guy,’ and ‘Silence of the Lambs’
Had a recurring role as Blythe House, Hugh Laurie’s mother on the TV show, ‘House’

Why she might be annoying:

She has a decades’ long career in film and television, but will only ever be remembered for her small role as the Senator who is harassed by Hannibal Lecter in ‘Silence of the Lambs’ ('take this thing back to Baltimore,' ‘love your suit’).
She acted in the infamous Joan Crawford B-movie slasher, ‘Straight Jacket.’
She failed to achieve ‘leading lady’ status in films and worked almost exclusively on television until reemerging years later as a film character actress.
She went from being typecast as the naïve ‘girl next door’ to being typecast as wealthy, domineering mothers (including Rose Kennedy).
She was nominated for two Golden Globes and two Emmy Awards but didn’t win once.

Why she might not be annoying:

She had the bad luck to be caught in the middle of Alfred Hitchcock’s obsessive sexual tension with a reluctant Tippi Hendren during the filming of the disastrous ‘Marni.’
She approached a nervous, recently widowed, Joan Crawford on the set of ‘The Best of Everything’ and assured her she was going to ‘do great’ in her next scene, allegedly moving Crawford to tears (Crawford would reciprocate by insisting she be cast opposite her in ‘Straight Jacket’).
She was classy enough to not take it personally when Crawford cut down her role in ‘Straight Jacket,’ insisting that any big star 'would have done the same thing' that Crawford did.
She remains close with Millie Perkins, who played her sister in ‘Diary of Anne Frank’ (it was the first time filming a movie for both).
After her screen test for the part of Margot Frank, Otto Frank walked up to her and told her, ‘you are so like my daughter Margot,' who had died in the Bergen Belsen Concentration Camp in 1945 (pretty deep thing to say to a 19 year old).
She has been the Director of the Motion Pictures and Television major program at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, since 2004.
She has had small but memorable roles in some of the greatest films ever made.
