Why he might be annoying:

He called his wife 'mama' and would only accept critique of his film work from her.
He didn't learn to ride a horse until he was nearly 50 and admitted he was not particularly fond of the Western genre that made him famous.
He coined the Western phrases 'young whipper snapper,' 'yer durn tootin' and 'consarn it'

He was married to his wife for over 40 years until her 1956 death.
Unlike the characters he portrayed in films he was well-groomed, well-spoken, intelligent and sophisticated.
He invested his film money wisely and retired wealthy after his TV series ended, unretiring only to fill in for 'Buffalo Bob' Smith on the 'Howdy Doody' TV series while Smith recovered from a 1954 heart attack.
He has two stars on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame for his work in movies and TV.
