    He was a stage manager for Howdy Doody.
    He fled to a small cabin in Oregon in the late 70s.
    He had drug and alcohol problems.
    He got arrested for marijuana possession in front of his children (1970s).
    He knew a lot about the private lives of celebrities.
    His daughter was murdered in 1982.
    When her killer was sentenced to 3 years in prison, he was outraged and wrote an article about the trial, which led to a contract with Vanity Fair.
    His 1975 book, 'A Season in Purgatory' was made into a TV Movie that helped bring interest to bring Michael Skakel to justice.
    He was awarded the Bronze Star for his bravery in World War II.
    He didn't feel like retiring.
