Homunculus is Latin for 'little person'
Believed to be found in sperm and eventually live in the brain
    Concept proposed by Nicolas Hartsoeker
They tend to turn on their creator.
The Jewish Golem was said to originate from a homonculus.
During the 1600's, it was widely believe that sperm contained a small person (homonculus), that grew up to be human.
Paracelsus, an alchemist claimed he created a homonculus (1656). He claimed it was 12 inches tall. His recipe consisted of a bag of bones, sperm, skin fragments and hair from any animal. Lay that mixture in the ground surrounded by horse manure for forty days, to form the embryo.
A formula in the 'Magica Divina' to make a boy and girl homunculi: take a 'bowl of finest crystal, One measure May [Peonu?] Dew, two measures human blood, and one drachm [dram?] Animal Tincture.' It takes four months for life to begin, they grow to six inches and require only a morsel of food every month and will live happily for six years. When they reach six years old they explode causing great damage.
German surgeon/physiologist Kaspar Friedrich Wolff published 'Theoria Generations,' challenging the Homonculi theory (1759). It was not until the 1800s that Wolff's theory against Homonculus was widely believed.
Many science fiction stories are based on the Homonculus, where a creation turns against its creator (i.e. Frankenstein).
