Why he might be annoying:

He fought as a combat pilot for Germany in World War I.
He survived eight air crashes without severe injuries, but it took only one car accident to kill him.
(The car was driven by his 14 year old Filipino servant.)
He kept his homosexuality in the closet.
'Sunrise' was an artistic success, but a commercial failure in many big cities, since it was released at about the same time as Al Jolson's 'The Jazz Singer,' the first Hollywood talkie.
After completing only three pictures with Fox Films, he broke off his five-film contract because his films were failing at the box office.
He couldn't get along with documentarian Robert Flaherty during the making of 'Tabu' (1931).

He is considered one of silent cinema's most important filmmakers.
Many of his early films have been lost.
Nosferatu is the first (but unauthorized) adaptation of Bram Stoker's novel, 'Dracula.'
'Sunrise' won big during the 1st annual Oscar Awards (1929) with Best Picture (Unique and Artistic Production), Best Cinematography and Best Actress in a Leading Role.
John Malkovich portrays him in 'Shadow of the Vampire (2000),' a movie about the production of Nosferatu.
