His nickname is 'Hammer,' derived from his high school football antics and a film that he would later star in.
For most of his career, he was restricted to playing stereotypical black characters.
All of the films he directed were critical and financial failures, having directed himself in no less than 19 films.
Over half the films he starred in were blaxploitation films.
He was the only major blaxploitation star missing from the Keenan Ivory Wayans spoof 'I'm Gonna Git You Sucka.'
He posed virtually nude for playgirl magazine, October 1973.
