U.S. Governor
    (June 13, 1957- )
    Born in Nashville, North Carolina
Birth name is Roy Asberry Cooper III
Governor of North Carolina (assumed office January 1, 2017)
    North Carolina Attorney General (2001-17)
He rode his way into office on the coattails of the outrage over incumbent Governor McCrory's signing into law HB2 (AKA the 'Transgender Bathroom Bill').
He vetoed a bill allowing nonprofits to have 'game nights,' because he thought it could foster a video poker industry.
He drew the ire of President Trump after he reportedly failed to promise that the state's COVID-lockdown policies would ease in time to ensure full capacity for the Republican National Convention.
Trump made a veiled threat to change venues, tweeting out: 'I love the Great State of North Carolina so much so that I insisted on having the Republican National Convention in Charlotte at the end of August. Unfortunately, Democrat Governor [Cooper] is still in Shutdown mood & unable to guarantee that by August we will be allowed full attendance in the Arena. In other words, we would be spending millions of dollars building the Arena to a very high standard without even knowing if the Democrat Governor would allow the Republican Party to fully occupy the space.'
Trump made good on his threat, later tweeting: 'Roy Cooper and his representatives refuse to guarantee that we can have use of the Spectrum Arena - Spend millions of dollars, have everybody arrive, and then tell them they will not be able to gain entry. Governor Cooper is still in Shelter-In-Place Mode, and not allowing us to occupy the arena as originally anticipated and promised. Would have showcased beautiful North Carolina to the World, and brought in hundreds of millions of dollars, and jobs, for the State. Because of @NC_Governor, we are now forced to seek another State to host the 2020 Republican National Convention' (June 2020).
    His mother was a schoolteacher.
He served in the General Assembly in both the North Carolina House of Representatives and in the North Carolina State Senate.
President Trump appointed him to a commission tasked with combating the opioid epidemic.
Before he took office, the Republican-dominated legislature passed bills reducing the power of the governor's office in a 'special session.'
The legislature has overridden several of his vetoes of legislation.
He has been praised for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, although many of his constituents have protested the regulations.
