Why he might be annoying
He was offered a job to command field troops for the Union army by President Lincoln with the recommendation of General Winfield Scott, but he turned it down because he didn't want to fight against his home state, Virginia.
His military strategy turned the Confederate States of America into a viable threat to the Union, and helped lengthen the bloodiest and most costly American war ever waged.
He was better at waging a defensive war, and his attempts at offensive warfare often failed.
He was deeply religious, despite aiding in the deaths of millions of Americans.
He was not given back his citizenship until the 1970's, after being dead for nearly a century.
He is still well-loved in the South (C'mon, get over it).
Why he might not be annoying
After the Civil War, he wasn't involved in the KKK or any of that nonsense.
He had given up his slaves well before the Civil War had started and opposed slavery.
He opposed secession, but served in the Confederate army regardless, over his love of Virginia.
He hardly ever raised his voice or yelled.
During the closing year of the Civil War, when the South simply could not compete with the North any longer, he had the choice of using guerrilla warfare tactics, but wisely chose to surrender instead, knowing he'd save his country along with countless lives.
After his surrender to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia, the Confederacy basically fell apart and surrendered along with him.
He's considered to be one of the most brilliant generals in U.S. military history.
His likeness is carved at Stone Mountain Park, Georgia.
