    During his time in office, some officials under him were investigated for corruption.
    He was a good friend of French president Jacques Chirac.
    His death increased tension between Syria and Lebanon.
    He worked himself up from humble beginnings to become one of the richest men in the world.
    He advocated religious equality.
    He used his own fortune to clean the streets of Beirut and reform the Lebanese economy.
    He often donated his money to charitable or educational causes.
    He financed the Taif Accord, which ended a civil war in Lebanon (1989).
    He was killed when explosives detonated as his vehicle passed (February 14, 2005).
