    There were several different explanations for how he got 'Hoot' as a nickname.
    At 13, he ran away from home to join the circus.
    He was married four times, divorced three.
    His status as a star faded when singing cowboys became the rage.
    He spent his money as fast as in came in, leaving him in financial trouble when his career cooled off.
    He ended up performing in carnivals and working in Las Vegas as a casino greeter.
    He won the steer roping championship at the Calgary Stampede (1912).
    He started as a stuntman before being cast in lead roles.
    He interrupted his film career to join the army in WWI.
    He successfully made the transition from silent films to talkies.
    He was injured in a plane crash while competing in the National Air Races (1933).
    He was good friends with director John Ford.
