The Resume

    (June 11, 1934-February 13, 2018)
    Born in Talence, France
Birth name was Henri Marie Jean Andre de Laborde de Monpezat
Married Margarethe II of Denmark (June 10, 1967)
Published the poetry collections ‘Chemin faisant’ (1982), ‘Cantabile’ (2000), ‘Les Escargots de Marie Lanceline’ (2003) and ‘La Part des Anges’ (2014)

Why he might be annoying:

He came from a family that styled themselves as counts, even though they were never actually enobled by the French crown.
When his son, Crown Prince Frederick, was asked to substitute for Margarethe as host of a New Year’s Day reception, he left in a huff for his chateau in France, complaining, ‘For many years, I have been Denmark’s number two. I’ve been satisfied with that role, but I don’t want to be relegated to number three.’ (2002)
He missed his wife’s 75th birthday, claiming to be ill, only to be spotted enjoying himself in Venice with a group of friends (2015).
He repeatedly complained about not having ‘king consort’ as his title, calling it a form of gender discrimination.
He said, ‘All the queens in the history of the world have made their husbands kings,’ which would be news to Prince Albert and Prince Phillip.
As a final protest, he announced he would not be buried beside Margarethe (2017).

Why he might not be annoying:

He worked as a diplomat before marrying Margarethe.
He and Margarethe have been married for over 50 years.
He is fluent in French, Danish, English, Chinese and Vietnamese.
While his ‘king consort’ campaign may have failed, his earlier complaints that he had to rely on his wife for hand-outs prompted the Danish government to give him an independent allowance.
