Why he might be annoying
His biggest hits were novelty songs.
He recycled his characters, doing multiple songs about Leroy, the Troglodyte and Bertha Butt.
He called himself ‘The Everything Man' or ‘E Man' and was depicted on album covers in an E Man superhero outfit.
He unsuccessfully tried to cash in on the Star Wars phenomenon with ‘Bertha Butt Encounters Darth Vader.'
Why he might not be annoying
He had his first million-seller at age 13 when he wrote ‘I Promise to Remember' for Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers.
He incorporated doo-wop and Latin soul influences on his albums.
Along with James Brown and George Clinton, he is one of the most heavily sampled funk musicians, with ‘It's Just Begun' alone being sampled by The Spice Girls, Eric B & Rakim, 2 Live Crew, Marky Mark, Rob Base, The Jungle Brothers, Lisa Lisa, MC Lyte, Salt N Pepa and Kool Moe Dee.
