He sometimes used the pen name Leslie Northern for no particular reason.
Using his wife's name as his pen name, he wrote a series of modern Gothic novels strictly for money which, though they sold well, were hammered by critics and long-time fans.

His biography of close friend H. P. Lovecraft had to be heavily revised in later printings.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was close friends with H. P. Lovecraft, who called him a 'genius' and who 'exchanged more than a thousand letters, not a few running more than eighty hand-written pages.' Indeed, Lovecraft was so well liked by Long's family that Long's parents would take him on vacation with them and he would spend Christmas with Long and his family.
Arthur Machen was also a close friend, and Long wrote a book of poetry titled 'On Reading Arthur Machen.'

He grew up reading; L. Frank Baum, H. G. Wells, Jules Verne, and Edgar Allan Poe and was heavily influenced by them as a writer.
