Why she might be annoying
Her last name rhymes with fire.
'Kama Sutra' was banned by the Indian censorship board for being too 'pornographic.' Nair had to go through a two-year legal battle to get the film released with a minimum of censorship changes.
She admits that she raised money for her first film 'through a lot of scams' with film studios and investors.
She claims maintaining creative control over her films is imperative, yet she decided to make Hollywood films even though she says 'there is no such thing as creative independence here.'
Why she might not be annoying
She graduated from Delhi University and Harvard.
Her first feature film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
Her films have consistently been critically acclaimed and have won numerous awards at film festivals around the world.
She had to re-shoot several scenes of 'Monsoon Wedding' because hours of film negatives had been erased by an X-ray machine.
She established an annual workshop for aspiring screenwriters and directors from East Africa and South Asia.
