The Resume

    (September 17, 1932-January 18, 2010)
    Born in Springfield, Massachusetts
    Crime fiction writer
Best known for his three dozen 'Spenser' books

Why he might be annoying:

He originally planned to give Spenser the first name David, after his oldest son but did not want to omit his other son. Instead Spenser's first name is never mentioned in any of the novels.
He created detective Sunny Randall after Helen Hunt asked him to write a part she could play. (Or as he said, 'As far as Sunny Randall is concerned, my motive, purely and simply was greed.')
He said the only thing he liked about the 'Spenser For Hire' TV series was the residual checks.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was married to Joan Hall for 53 years until his death.
He revived the hard-boiled detective tradition of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett.
A prolific writer who published an average of three books a year he said, 'Writer's block? That's just another word for lazy.'
Fellow writer Harlan Coben said, 'When it comes to detective novels, 90 percent of us admit he's an influence, and the rest of us lie about it.'
