Military Personnel
    (June 1, 1825-September 4, 1864)
    Born in Huntsville, Alabama
    Cavalry officer
Confederate Brigadier General during the Civil War
Best known for leading Morgan's Raid behind Union lines in Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana (June 11-July 26, 1863)
Killed during a Union raid on Greenville, Tennessee
He was suspended from college for fighting a duel with a fraternity brother.
    He owned and sold slaves.
He had a reputation as a gambler and womanizer.
Morgan's Raid was launched in direct violation of orders from General Braxton Bragg to not cross the Ohio River.
His early cavalry raids prompted a Confederate writer to compare him to Francis Marion and declare, 'A few thousands of such men as his would regain us Kentucky and Tennessee.'
Four months after he was captured at the end of Morgan's Raid, he and six of his officers escaped by tunneling out of the Ohio Penitentiary (November 27, 1863).
Some of his men claim he was deliberately murdered so he couldn't embarrass the Union by making a second escape. (Although most historians think he simply got shot when he ignored orders to stop.)
Shortly after his funeral, his second daughter was born.
