    On teams that won three NCAA championships (1979,1981-82)
    Member of two Olympic gold medal winning US teams (1984,1988)
    Captain of the 1988 team
    With partner Kent Steffes, won the first gold medal in men's beach volleyball (1996)
    On the AVP Pro Beach Tour, set records for tournament wins (148) and earnings (over $3.1 million)
    Inducted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame (2001)

Why he might be annoying:

    He called himself a 'volley-dork.'
    When UCLA lost the NCAA title game to rivals USC, he punted the volleyball into the lights and was going after a chair when the coach restrained him (1980).
    His signature was wearing a hot pink Speedo hat.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He graduated cum laude from UCLA with a degree in biochemistry.
    He was the first (and, through the end of the 2012 Olympics, only) player to win Olympic medals in both indoor and beach volleyball.
    The International Federation of Volleyball named him and Italy's Lorenzo Bernardi jointly as the greatest players of the 20th century.
    He said of his career, 'It's been an absolute blast. I played a kid's game, I got to do it at the beach, and I was able to support my family. I consider myself incredibly lucky.'
