Spy

The Resume

    (1969- )
    C.I.A. Case officer (1998-2003)
    Stationed in Macedonia
Author of 'Blowing My Cover: My Life as a C.I.A. Spy'

Why she might be annoying:

She said: 'Being a spy is not nearly as cool as one might expect.'
Although the C.I.A. allows agents to use their own discretion in who they tell (other than foreigners), she opted only to tell her parents and brother.
She did not trust any friends when she was with the C.I.A. and cut off all ties with them.
She said that being a C.I.A. spy is mundane and not as exciting as one might think. She said 'at the end of the day the C.I.A. is a lot of people in sensible shoes sitting in cubicles.'
She compared her job to that of a sales person. Her job was recruiting foreigners to do the espionage and be informants.
She felt workers at the C.I.A. mistrusted each other.
She stressed when she had to use a different name.
She condemns herself for 'not having the resolve to stay with the organization.'
She said the job made her 'desperately lonely.'

Why she might not be annoying:

She decided to become a spy as a child when she read 'Harriet the Spy.'
    She graduated Harvard.
She became disillusioned over the Iraqi war, believing that Bush so badly wanted that war and the C.I.A. just told him what he wanted to hear rather than what was accurate.
Her brother was a fighter pilot in the Iraq war.
She said she would recommend a career in the C.I.A., but offers the caveat 'If you can hack the lying and the leading a double life and all the sacrifices you make, it's not a bad life. You're living overseas, you're probably doing well financially.'
She is now a much happier and more honest person now that she is not a spy.
She said her publisher cut out much more of her book than the C.I.A. did.
A C.I.A. reviewer advised her 'if you want to write that everyone at the C.I.A. is a drunk, you can write that because it might be true or it might not be true. But it's not classified information.'
She finds it hard to believe that no heads rolled at the C.I.A. after the September 11th attack.
She would like to see the training updated at the C.I.A..
She tried out her first C.I.A. disguise as simple black wig. Although wearing the same clothes, her mom did not recognize her.
She said: 'It's hard to lie to pretty much everybody who's important to you.'
She is published in The New York Times, the Washington Post, USA Today, Harvard magazine and Washingtonian.
