    He lost a close Senate race to John Kerry (1996).
    He resigned the governorship without finishing out his term (1997).
    He tried to become ambassador to Mexico, but Senator Jesse Helms (then head of the Senate Foreign Relations committee, refused to consider him.
    He announced his candidacy for governor of New York, but had no chance of winning.

    He was a moderate Republican governing a very liberal state.
    He was a Rhodes scholar.
    He dove into Boston harbor to prove that the water was safe.
    He supports medical marijuana use.
    He has written three novels.
