The show features excessive drinking, incessant smoking and rampant adultery.
Its pacing was criticized as 'lethargic.'
One real-life ad man from that era stated the depictions were a 'total fabrication.'
Activist group Commercial Alert complained because the show, sponsored by Jack Daniel's whiskey, violated ad standards by portraying indiscriminate sex.

The series premiere was AMC's highest-rated original telecast of all time.
The program exposed the homophobia, sexism and racism of a time that's been largely sanitized.
The show garnered praise for its visual style and historical accuracy.
