Hockey Coach

The Resume

    (June 21, 1955-September 26, 2001)
Born in White Plains, New York
    Died in Bangor, Maine
Assistant coach of the men's ice hockey teams at Bowling Green University (1978-79) and Michigan State University (1979-84)
Head coach for the men's ice hockey team at the University of Maine (1984-95, 1996-2001)
    NCAA National champion (1993, 1999)
    Career record of 399–215–44

Why he might be annoying:

He divorced his first wife, who was the daughter of his former mentor, longtime college hockey coach Ron Mason.
    He looked like Dennis Farina.
He often joked that he got his start in coaching by being a third string goaltender.
He used an ineligible player in two different seasons, which caused Maine to forfeit 27 games as a result.
He was suspended by the NCAA for the 1995-96 season for recruitment violations.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was credited with turning a Maine hockey program from a doormat to a perennial powerhouse.
He was described as being a coach who held his players accountable both on and off the ice.
He guided Maine to a  42–1–2 record, en route to the first national championship in the history of the school's hockey program.
He maintained a positive attitude following his diagnosis of renal cell carcinoma, and continued to coach up until it was physically unable for him to do so.
He was one win shy of 400 career wins, which he was sadly unable to accomplish as a result of his illness and eventual death.
He was considered an icon at the University of Maine, and would often lend his time to help recruit athletes to the school, regardless of what sport they participated in.
