The Resume
Spherical Cloud
The edge of the Solar System - extends from the edge of the planets to 3 light years from the Sun
Source of long period comets
Home of more than six trillion comets and icy objects
Temperature is 4° Celsius above absolute zero
Usually called the Oort cloud
Estonian astronomer Ernst Öpik theorized an orbiting cloud containing comets (1932)
Dutch astronomer Jan Hendrick Oort theorized that the cloud would replenish lost and destroyed comets (1950)
Why Opik-Oort Cloud might be annoying
It is fucking cold! Very close to absolute zero.
Approximate every quarter to half a billion years it collides with another star's Oort cloud and many comets are redistributed between them.
Some of their comets take a million years to orbit the Sun.
The Hale-Bopp comet caused three dozen nut jobs in Heaven's Gate to commit mass suicide (1997).
It's entire density is believed to be equal to Jupiter, but no one is certain.
Why Opik-Oort Cloud might not be annoying
According to www.solarviews.com/eng/oort.htm, it is 'An immense spherical cloud surrounding the planetary system, extending approximately 3 light years, about 30 trillion kilometers from the Sun. This vast distance is considered the edge of the Sun's orb of physical, gravitational, or dynamical influence.'
There is a theory that a brown dwarf star called Sol B, may reside in the cloud and thus account for some of the strangeness in Pluto.
Comets at the outer core of the cloud are sometimes lost to other stars but newer foreign comets are attracted.
Sedna is probably part of the cloud.
The comets approach randomly in all directions.
