Monarch
The Resume
(circa 1056-August 2, 1100)
Born in Normandy, France
Son of William the Conqueror
King of England (1087-1100)
Why he might be annoying
He scorned the English and their culture.
He had a noble accused of treachery, William of Eu, blinded and castrated.
The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle described him as ‘hated by almost all his people.’
He was so unpopular, no one felt like investigating his rather suspicious death.
Why he might not be annoying
Historian William of Malmesbury described him as ‘dressed in the height of fashion.’
He had to suppress a revolt led by his uncle to overthrow him in favor of his older brother, Robert Curthose of Normandy (1088).
He officially died in a hunting accident, shot in the back by one Walter Tyrell.
Many historians think Tyrell was acting on behalf of William’s younger brother, who took the throne as King Henry I.
