Acted in ‘Shane (1953),’ ‘A Star is Born (1954),’ ‘Anything Goes (1956),’ ‘I Love Lucy (1956),’ ‘Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1956),’ ‘The Three Faces of Eve (1957),’ ‘Perry Mason (1958-1959),’ ‘The Parent Trap (1961),’ ‘The Twilight Zone (1962),’ ‘The Aristocats (1970),’ ‘Sanford and Son (1975-1976),’ ‘The Love Boat (1978-1981),’ ‘Fantasy Island (1983)’ and ‘Quantum Leap (1989)’
Nickname was ‘Slim’

She was typecast as spinsters and butches.
Although her ‘Beverly Hillbillies’ character was actually heterosexual, her butch look made her a lesbian icon.
She ran for Congress as a Democrat, but lost (1984).
In a campaign ad, she claimed that all her former ‘Beverly Hillbillies’ co-stars were on her side.
This caused Buddy Ebsen, a Republican, to campaign against her, costing her the election.
She was a regular on a failed Arte Johnson comedy show, ‘Ver-r-ry Interesting.’
A newspaper once called her ‘the homeliest girl on television.’

She was openly lesbian in real life.
She spoke fluent French, which she put to use on ‘The Beverly Hillbillies.’
She was discovered by the famous director George Cukor.
Before working in television, she had small roles in classic films like ‘Shane’ and ‘A Star is Born.’
She continued to work on TV long after ‘The Beverly Hillbillies’ was canceled.
She had a recurring role on ‘Sanford and Son.’
She died of cancer, which ravaged her body at the end of her life.
Her ‘Beverly Hillbillies’ character was one of the most popular on the show.
She was a memorable call-in guest on ‘The Howard Stern Show.’
