    There have been complaints that its city council and police force is not representative of its population (it is 70% black and only 20% white).
    They didn't elect an African-American or female mayor until 2020.
    Until the 1960s, it was a sundown town where African Americans were not allowed to remain after nightfall.
    It made headlines worldwide following the killing of Michael Brown by Officer Darren Wilson, provoking massive riots and prompting a Department of Justice investigation (August 2014).
    Its name became shorthand for the civil unrest that follows instances of police killings of unarmed civilians.

    It was founded as a station for a railroad.
