Recorded the single 'Help Me Make It Through the Night' (1971)
Why she might be annoying
She dropped out of school at age 11 to sing in nightclubs.
She smoked heavily.
Like many country artists, she had only one song cross over to the pop charts.
In the long run, 'Help Me Make It Through the Night' did more for its writer, Kris Kristoferson, than her.
Why she might not be annoying
'Help Me Make It Through the Night' sold over 2 million copies.
She became one of the few women in the country 'outlaw' movement and was called 'Girl Hero' by Waylon Jennings.
She said, 'I've forfeited making the Top Ten 'cause I would only do songs I wanted to do.'
Part Kiowa and Apache, she adopted two Apache children and established a scholarship for aspiring Apache physicians.
