Explorer
The Resume
(July 16, 1872-June 18, 1928)
Discovered the South Pole (December 14, 1911)
First sailor to pass through the Northwest Passage (August 17, 1905)
Why he might be annoying
He was gloomy.
He was an egomaniac, and rubbed his success in other explorers' faces.
When he beat Britain's Robert Falcon Scott to the South Pole, he left a sarcastic note asking Scott to report it to the King of Norway.
He was sneaky, and wouldn't let others know when he planned expeditions.
He borrowed a friend's ship to go to the North Pole, but went to the South Pole instead without telling him (don't you hate when your friends do this?).
He wouldn't let his sailors have sex with Inuit women.
When pronounced with a Norwegian accent, his name sounds like ‘Rolled Almondsen,' which could be mistaken for a nutty treat.
Why he might not be annoying
His mother made him study medicine instead of following his dream to be an explorer.
He took a methodical approach to his expeditions.
He was observant and learned from his mistakes.
Unlike many other explorers of his time, he didn't dismiss the Inuit as savages.
He was the first explorer to reach the South Pole, and to cross the Northwest Passage.
His plane disappeared while he was trying to rescue other explorers.
