Why he might be annoying:

    During the Suez Crisis (1956-57), he was described as 'First In, First Out': one of the earliest supporters of the invasion, then a prime mover in British withdrawal.
    He appointed 35 relatives to government posts, including 7 cabinet positions.
    His nephew Andrew Cavendish described his appointment as Minister for Colonial Affairs as 'the greatest act of nepotism ever.'
    When the three top Treasury officials resigned to protest his economic policies, he dismissed it as 'a little local difficulty.'
    His goverment collapsed over the Profumo affair.
    Reading his six-volume autobiography was described as being like 'chewing on cardboard.'

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was wounded three times during World War I.
    He decided not to return to Oxford after WWI, saying so many of his fellow students had died that the university would never be the same.
    During the 30s, he criticized Neville Chamberlain's appeasement policies.
    He played a key role in negotiating the Partial Test Ban Treaty between the UK, the US and the USSR (1962).
    Asked by a reporter what was the greatest challenge for a statesman, he replied, 'Events, my dear boy, events.'
