Religious Figure
The Resume
(circa 283-circa 304)
Born in Syracuse, Sicily
Executed by being stabbed in the throat by order of the governor Diocletian
Patron saint of the blind
Feast day December 13
Why she might be annoying
As with many saints, much of her biography is probably fictitious.
Her family was rich and aristocratic.
She is gruesomely represented by two eyeballs on a platter.
She angered her mother by refusing to marry.
A dubious legend claims she tore out her eyes because a suitor admired them.
Her feast day falls on the shortest day of the year (by the old Julian calendar).
Her body parts ended up in different churches across Europe.
Why she might not be annoying
She gave away all of her wealth to the poor.
Her mother recovered from a hemorrhage by divine intervention.
Afterwards she supported Lucy’s decision to serve Christ instead of marrying.
Her rejected fiancée betrayed her as a Christian to the governor.
She was sentenced to forced prostitution (soldiers were unable to carry her off, however).
She survived an attempt to burn her to death.
Her eyes may have been gouged out by her torturers.
Because she saved Sweden from a famine, she is popular in Scandinavian countries.
