    Color commentator/radio and TV play-by-play announcer for the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves (1962-1999)
    Inducted into the Braves Hall of Fame (2001)
    Father of broadcaster Ernie Johnson, Jr.
    Died following a long illness at age 87

Why he might be annoying:

    He gave up the pitch for Hank Bauer's Game 6 winning home run during the 1957 World Series.
    Also in the 1957 World Series, he struck out in his only World Series at-bat.
    He had a 5-7 losing record in the 1955 season.
    Despite being associated with the Braves, he retired from his major league playing career with a losing Orioles team.
    He named his son after himself.

    He served in World War II as a U.S. Marine.
    He led the Braves pitchers with 175 relief appearances (35 average per season) during the team's first five years in Milwaukee (1953-1957).
    He was instrumental with the 1957 World Series winning Braves team.

    He was married to his wife, Lois, for over 60 years until his death.
