Bodybuilder
    (March 17, 1912-June 5, 2016)
Born in Tipperah, India (now Comilla, Bangladesh)
Won the Mr. Universe title (1952)
Was 4 feet 10.5 inches tall
    Nicknamed ‘Pocket Hercules’
After several years in a sideshow, he tried to start his own circus, but it failed because of his lack of financial skills.
While serving as a physical education instructor in the Royal Indian Air Force, he spent a year in jail after slapping a British officer during an argument over colonialism (1942-43).
He ran unsuccessfully for Parliament (1991).
He said his biggest disappointment in life was never meeting Arnold Schwarzenegger.
In childhood, he survived bouts of cholera and Kala-azar (a.ka. ‘black fever’) without requiring hospitalization.
While he was in prison, the British encouraged his bodybuilding (despite his fondness for bending the bars of his cell with his hands) and provided him with a special high-protein diet.
He regularly went to a gym to work out and/or train students until he suffered a stroke at age 96.
He and his wife Jyuthika were married for 78 years until her death.
He credited his longevity to a simple diet, abstinence from drinking and smoking, and not worrying: ‘I never allow any sort of tension to grip me…. Whatever the situation, I remained happy.’
