Despite being both the capital and the largest city in the state, it still tends to be overshadowed by Charleston.
South Carolina voted to secede from the Union here (December 20, 1859).
Most of the city burned down during the Civil War (February 17, 1865).
It had no paved streets until 1908.
After a federal judge ruled that the city's black teachers were entitled to the same pay as their white counterparts (1945), the city started stripping blacks of their teaching credentials.
It has recorded highs of 107 F in June, July and August.
It is prone to inversions that trap ozone and pollutants over the city.

It was one of the first planned cities in the US.
Due to an erroneous belief that mosquitoes could not fly more than 60 feet without starving, it has many 100-foot wide streets.
James Doolittle and his pilots trained for their raid on Tokyo at the local airport.
'Newsweek' lauded it as a city that 'liberated itself from the plague of doctrinal apartheid' (1965).
It was named one of 'America's Most Livable Communities' by the non-profit Partners for Livable Communities.
RetireHomeSmart.com named it America's second-best retirement city.
