Why they might be annoying
Four group members were accused of having sexual relations with minors.
The resulting arrests caused several radio stations to stop playing their music.
After disbanding, members fought over rights to use ‘The Platters’ name when touring.
Zola Taylor claimed she had an affair with Frankie Lymon when he was 13.
They initially refused to record ‘The Great Pretender,’ calling it ‘a hillbilly song.’
Why they might not be annoying
They were one of the few Doo-Wop groups to use string instruments in their music.
They were the first black act to have a #1 pop single in the United States.
The arrested group members were eventually acquitted of all charges filed against them.
Their song ‘The Great Pretender’ was included in ‘Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.’
They were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (1990).
