Birth name was Sabri Khalil al-Banna
Founder of Fatah the Revolutionary Council, aka the Abul Nidal Organization (ANO)
Responsible for numerous hijackings, bombings and assassinations against Israel, nations supporting Israel and rival Palestinian factions

He ordered attacks that killed or injured 900 people.
In his most notorious attack, gunmen opened fire on El Al passengers at the Rome and Vienna airports, killing 16 and wounding 99 (December 27, 1985).
He was paranoid and suspected his wife of being an CIA spy.
He periodically purged the ANO, torturing hundreds of followers until they confessed to disloyalty, then killing them.
Some ANO members were tortured by having their genitals placed in skillets of boiling oil.
At his death, the Guardian called him a 'patriot turned psychopath. He served only the warped personal drives that pushed him into hideous crime.'

When he was seven, his father died and his mother, who the rest of the family had never approved of, was turned out of the house.
He officially committed suicide, but was probably assassinated.
Perhaps fittingly, his death was reportedly ordered by the equally paranoid Saddam Hussein, who worried that Nidal would work for the Americans during an invasion if the price was right.
