In an effort to attract him, George Steinbrenner allowed
Bernie Williams and Jason Giambi to participate in an all-star tour to recruit him.
He turned down a six billion yen five year deal from the Yomiuri Giants in 2000 so he could become a free agent in 2002.
Why he might not be annoying
He is a left handed batter.
He signed a three year $21 million contract to play with the New York Yankees (2003-05).
He turned down a four year $33 million offer (to stay with the Yomiuri Giants to play with the Yankees.
His first choice was to play with the Yankees, so he did not pursue other U.S. teams.
Due to this deal, Major League baseball agreed to allow more Yankee games to be shown in Japan.
