    Born in Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina
    One of the most well-known contemporary Serbian writers
    Studied at University of Belgrade's Faculty of Philology (1930-1934)
    Wrote 'The First Company' (1950), 'Silences' (1961), 'Foreign Land' (1962), 'Mist and Moonlight' (1965), 'Death and the Dervish' (1966), 'The Fortress' (1970), 'The Island' (1974), and 'The Circle' (1983)
    Died in Belgrade, Serbia

Why he might be annoying:

    He was a member of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia.
    Of the thirteen books he wrote, only 'Death and the Dervish' and 'The Fortress' have been translated into English.
    'Death and the Dervish' has a very pessimistic tone on the futility to challenge the status quo, leading critics to compare it to Kafka's 'The Trial'.
    He de-emphasized his Muslim heritage in a letter to the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts. (1976)

Why he might not be annoying:

    He fought for the anti-fascist resistance movement during World War II and got arrested as a result. (1943)
    His brother was executed by his fellow partisans without trial for theft.
    His books addressed the issues of human existence, like greed, war, lust for power, injustice, the relationship between individuality and authority, and morality.
    'The Fortress' has a more optimistic tone than 'Death and the Dervish', featuring faith and fulfillment in love.
